820 Main Gallery is hosting an event combing an art opening with a musical performance by New York and Cape Cod artists. CROSS ISLAND, together with clarinetist Thomas Piercy will present in an eclectic program of solos, duets (clarinet/cello, cello/piano, and clarinet/piano) and trios spanning centuries, styles, and genres, ranging from Classical through Jazz, Blues, and Latin. The program will blend beloved favorites with new discoveries, including works written or arranged especially for CROSS ISLAND and highlighting music by women composers. Composers will include local favorite Canary Burton (Wellfleet), as well as Amy Beach, Barbara Bach Steinberg, Paquito D'Rivera, Keri Degg, James Grant, Art Lillard, Mark McCarron, Astor Piazzolla, Paul Schoenfield, Ruth Schonthal, Franz Schubert, and Robert Schumann, and there will also be a free improvisation - a spontaneous work never performed before and never to be repeated.
Violist Laura Balboni Craciun will be performing a viola/cello duet by Canary Burton with Suzanne, which she has interpreted in a painting. The painting will be on display during the performance, along with the many paintings in the upstairs gallery by the artists of 820 Main.The concert will conclude with a drawing for a copy of CROSS ISLAND's 2011 CD, Quiet Strength, and Thomas Piercy's EP CD, Richard Rodney Bennett's Ballad in Memory of Shirley Horn.
Artists will be encouraged to create paintings during the concert, inspired by the music being performed.
A casual meet-the-artists reception will follow.
